Antelope Canyon

Arizona

Basics: Be sure to fill up your gas tank before leaving Flagstaff, as gas stations are sparse in this area. Additionally, be mindful of the time changes you may see when traveling from Arizona into Navajo territory. There are times of the year when they are an hour off.

Accommodations: Since we did this trip over Sukkos, we wanted to be near Chabad. We found an Airbnb from the links the Rabbi has listed on his website. The walk to shul was under 10 minutes each way.

We chose Flagstaff since we knew that we wanted to drive to the Grand Canyon/ Page, which is closer to Flagstaff than the other Jewish communities in Arizona.

Kosher Food/ Minyan: We brought along most of our food, however, we also stocked up on some basics at the local Wal- Mart.

Chabad of Flagstaff also has a catering option.

We joined Chabad of Flagstaff for minyanim.

Sukkah: We built a sukkah by building a frame out of 2x3’s. We used s’chach mats we found in Home Depot for the walls and roof.

We used LED strip lights for the lighting.

We ordered the mats, wood, and light strips for pickup at the Home Depot in Flagstaff so we could be sure that the materials were ready and prepared for us in time for Sukkos.

Weather: The weather in Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon is a bit cooler and drier than in New York; however, the sun can be very strong.

Page and Sedona however are much hotter- with temperatures as high as the upper 80’s and 90’s.

Attractions: Most of the attractions did not require prior reservation, however, the Antelope Canyon does require reservations, and the tours run to the minute. Do not be late.

Additionally, the boat rentals often only have half-day/full-day rentals. Reserve the boat in advance so you can customize the length of time you’d like the rental for.
