Tropical Beach

Hawaii

Basics: Big Island is home to many attractions that require off-roading. Although we didn’t get to experience them, we highly recommend checking out the stunning waterfalls and lush rainforests. Renting a Jeep is a great idea, as most rental cars are 4x4s anyway. This way, even if it's not on your itinerary, you can add some spontaneous adventures without being limited.

Hawaii is close to the International Date Line, so consult your Rabbi regarding Shabbos. We were advised to observe one day.

The highway drives are beautiful, lined with colorful flowers throughout the landscape!

Accommodations: We stayed at the Hilton Waikoloa Village, and it was fantastic! The resort offered so many on-site activities that we ended up canceling some of our planned outings to spend more time enjoying the resort.

There are three large pools, and we found quiet corners at each one. My baby loved the shallow kiddie pool, which has a sandy bottom—perfect for playtime!

The beach is relatively small, so it’s best to arrive early for beach chairs. As the tide comes in, the beach slowly disappears and then reappears. However, there is plenty of shallow water space for play, and we never felt crowded.

You can also rent kayaks, paddleboards, and more at the beach. We had a great time trying everything out!

Lastly, there is a Dolphin Quest on-site, providing free entertainment all day. We spent Shabbos enjoying the dolphins as they showcased their skills!

Kosher Food/ Minyan: We brought along most of our food but also stocked up on basics at local Walmart, Target, and Safeway. There is a Chabad on the island that is very helpful with finding hotels for Shabbos and offers kosher takeout.

Be sure to reach out to the local Chabad rabbis (there are 2) regarding minyan.

Weather: The weather on most of the Big Island is sunny and beautiful! However, Hilo can be quite chilly and rainy, so don’t forget to pack a sweatshirt.

Attractions: We booked most attractions in advance, although we did so fairly close to our departure date and didn’t have any trouble finding available slots.
