Iceland

Basics: In general, Iceland, like many other European countries, has limited disposable options for cutlery and paper goods. The country is very environmentally conscious and does not stock items made of plastic or Styrofoam. We struggled to find many basic supplies, but we discovered that Hagkaup offered the most variety for items like containers, grills, paper goods, and coolers.

Kosher Food: For kosher food, there are many items available locally that are on Chabad's kosher list, so it's a good idea to consult that list before packing. Chabad also offers takeout, and their food is delicious with generous portions. If you’re based in Reykjavik, it’s definitely worth ordering from them. We also found that we could bring in any kosher items we wanted that were hard to find, such as frozen milk, hot dogs, and burgers, without any issues.

Minyan: Chabad offers a minyan on Shabbos and many weekdays throughout the summer months. Be in touch with the Rabbi before scheduling your trip to confirm.

Shabbos: Since the sun barely sets in Iceland throughout the summer months, Shabbos starts and ends very late throughout the summer months. Chabad started Friday night davening at around 10:00 PM, and Havdalah was at 1:30 AM.

Weather: Even in July, the weather in Iceland can be unpredictable. Throughout our trip, we experienced all four seasons and various types of weather. Be prepared with layers at all times. We kept a bag handy filled with sweaters, heavy sweatshirts, jackets, and winter coats. Make sure your coats and jackets are waterproof, as it rains a lot! Additionally, the winds in Iceland can be extremely strong and cold. On our first day, the winds were so fierce that we feared our car doors would fly off every time we opened them. There's a reason car rentals warn you about the winds!

Hotels: Some hotels in Iceland have limited check-in hours, so be sure to check those details before booking. Keep a note of the check-in times throughout your trip. We found ourselves stranded without a hotel at midnight, and we don’t want you to have the same experience!

Hotels in Iceland fill up quickly for the summer season. For the best options, be sure to make your reservations well in advance.
