Waterfalls

Niagara Falls

Basics: Although the Canadian side prices items in Canadian dollars, U.S. dollars are widely accepted.

Niagara Falls is walkable, especially along the main attractions, but if you’re staying farther away, you may need to drive or take public transportation. The WEGO bus system operates around the Falls and major attractions.

Minyan: Niagara offers many minyanim throughout Chol Hamoed and the summer months. If you will be visiting at a different time, be sure to get in touch with the Chabad Rabbi for accurate minyan information. Additionally, if you choose to stay in Buffalo (about an hour away from Niagara), there are multiple year round minyan options there as well.

Kosher Food: Niagara does not have a kosher supermarket, but you can find the basics with an OU certification in many of the area supermarkets. Additionally, there are two kosher restaurants operating during the summer months up to Sukkos. Both Taste (the meat restaurant) and Niagara Kosher Café (the dairy restaurant) offer delicious food. Both are located within the Chabad Jewish Welcome Center.

Shabbos: Chabad offers 3 Shabbos meals as well as minyanim during the high season. If you will be visiting during the off-season, be sure to fill out your information on Chabad’s website under the Shabbos tab so the Rabbi can let you know if there will be a minyan that week. Even if there is no minyan, the shul will be open.

Weather: Be prepared for a range of weather conditions, especially in the spring and fall. It can be chilly by the Falls, so bring layers, especially if you plan to get wet on boat tours like Maid of the Mist or Hornblower. Summer months can be hot and humid, so dress comfortably and bring sunscreen.

Hotels and Attractions: There are many hotels to choose from along the strip facing the Falls on the Canadian side. The attractions and hotels are mostly within walking distance of each other.

We’ve visited Niagara multiple times and never found that we needed to book activities in advance, though it may be necessary to book the jet boat in advance during the months of July and August.

If you will be visiting many of the attractions, it may be worthwhile to purchase a Niagara Falls Wonder Pass, which offers discounts on attractions and includes free rides on the local buses. Additionally, check Chabad’s website before going, as there are sometimes events you can join scheduled during busy seasons, as well as discounts on passes and attractions.
