Lancaster, PA, is conveniently located near many of the major Jewish communities in the tri-state area. Its close proximity, combined with a wide variety of kid-friendly attractions and outdoor activities, makes it an ideal choice for a summer family getaway. While we haven’t personally tried every recommendation on the list below, we’ve visited Lancaster many times and, with input from friends and fellow travelers, we’ve compiled what we believe is one of the most comprehensive guides to family fun in the area.
Hershey Park
Located in Hershey, PA, about 30–40 minutes from Lancaster, Hersheypark features over 70 rides, including roller coasters, water rides, kiddie attractions, live shows, games, and Hershey chocolate treats.
Extra Fun: Don’t miss Chocolate World, where you can take a free tour and make your own candy bar.
Dutch Wonderland
This amusement park caters to young families with over 35 rides, water attractions, and live shows, all set in a magical kingdom theme.
Kreider Farms
Just outside Lancaster, Kreider Farms offers a dairy farm tour where visitors can watch cows being milked, see how milk is bottled, and sample dairy products like ice cream and cheese. Kreider milks 1700 cows three times a day!
Fun fact: The popular Pride of the Farm milk and ice cream are produced at Kreider.

Cherry Crest Adventure Farm
Cherry Crest Adventure Farm is a family-favorite seasonal attraction located in the heart of Amish country. Best known for its award-winning corn maze, the farm offers over 50 outdoor activities spread across acres of farmland, including hayrides, pedal carts, giant slides, jump pillows, and hands-on encounters with farm animals. Designed for all ages, there's a toddler-friendly play area as well as more adventurous attractions for older kids. The farm is open during the spring, summer, and fall, with seasonal events like baby animal festivals and harvest celebrations.

Eastland Alpacas
Eastland Alpacas is an educational farm experience in Mount Joy, PA, where visitors of all ages can get up close and personal with a friendly herd of over 100 alpacas. Families can feed and pet these gentle animals, learn about how their soft, luxurious wool is sheared and processed, and watch demonstrations during seasonal events. The on-site farm store offers a variety of handmade alpaca products, including scarves, socks, and stuffed animals—perfect for unique gifts or cozy souvenirs.

Lil Miniature Horse Farm
This Amish-owned farm offers a delightful experience for families, especially those with young children. Visitors can interact with miniature horses, pygmy goats, alpacas, and chickens in a free petting zoo setting. The barn features 10 stalls with large openings, allowing children to pet and take photos with the animals. For a more interactive experience, the farm offers saddle rides (for children under 70 lbs) and cart rides, each priced at $7 per child. Additionally, families can participate in a treasure hunt involving animal activities or attend a miniature horse workshop, which includes grooming, feeding, and riding the horses.

Barnyard Kingdom

Strasburg Rail Road
Experience a 45-minute scenic journey aboard America's oldest continuously operating railroad, dating back to 1832. This heritage railroad offers a nostalgic ride through Lancaster County's picturesque Amish countryside, providing breathtaking views of farmland and historic landmarks. Passengers can choose from various seating options, including open-air cars for unobstructed views, coach seating in restored wooden railcars, and first-class parlor cars with plush seating.
At the station, visitors can explore attractions like the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania and the Red Caboose Motel. The railroad's mechanical shop offers behind-the-scenes tours, providing insights into the restoration and maintenance of vintage steam locomotives.

Amish Farm and House
The Amish Farm and House offers an immersive experience of Amish culture and daily life. Visitors can explore a historic 1805 farmhouse on a 15-acre farm, guided by knowledgeable staff who provide insights into Amish traditions, beliefs, and history. The farm features a one-room schoolhouse, farm animals, and artisan demonstrations, allowing guests to engage with the community's way of life. The site also offers various tours, including a countryside bus tour that showcases Amish farms and homes, providing a comprehensive understanding of the Amish lifestyle.

The Amish Village
Located in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, The Amish Village offers an immersive experience into Amish culture and daily life. Spanning 12 scenic acres, visitors can explore an authentic 1840 Amish farmhouse through a 25-minute guided tour, gaining insights into Amish traditions and lifestyle. Beyond the farmhouse, the self-guided village tour includes a one-room schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, barn with farm animals, and various outbuildings, providing a comprehensive view of Amish life.

Strasburg Scooter Tours
Strasburg Scooter Tours provides guided tours of Amish Country on 2- or 3-wheel scooters, allowing guests to get up close and personal with Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Guests may enjoy a guided covered bridge tour, where you will explore the beautiful back roads of Amish Country. Ride alongside horse and buggies as well as past Amish schoolhouses with an experienced guide.

Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum
Once an actual rural crossroads village, Landis Valley has more than 40 historic structures located on 100 scenic acres. Costumed guides explain Pennsylvania German traditions and folklore, skilled artisans demonstrate traditional crafts, and open hearth cooking. Horse-drawn wagon rides are also offered during special events and for groups.
KayakLanCo
KayakLanCo offers a hassle-free kayaking experience with six scenic routes in Lancaster County, tailored for all ages and skill levels. Ziplines & Outdoor Adventure at Refreshing Mountain
Refreshing Mountain offers a variety of outdoor activities, including zipline tours, rock climbing walls, elevated obstacle courses, and nature trails. The adventure center features different zipline options to suit all comfort levels—from beginner-friendly courses for kids as young as 5, to more advanced, high-speed lines for teens and adults.
