Playa del Carmen boasts some of the most stunning resorts in the region—arguably even the world—with multiple pools, private plunge pools, kid-friendly amenities, and endless on-site activities. While it’s definitely tempting to spend your entire vacation lounging on the resort’s private beach with a drink in hand (trust me, we get it!), we highly recommend setting aside a day or two to venture out and explore the beauty beyond the resort gates.
Below is a list of our favorite family-friendly activities in the area—each one offering a fun, memorable way to experience the magic of the Riviera Maya.
Swim and Snorkel at Xel-Há Park
If your kids are water lovers, Xel-Há is going to blow their minds. This place is basically a natural water park built into a lagoon, and it’s massive. You can spend the entire day snorkeling with colorful fish, floating down the lazy river, ziplining into cenotes, and even biking through jungle paths. Gear and drinks are included, so it makes for a super easy and stress-free day.

Adventure Awaits at Xcaret Park
Xcaret is one of those places where you think, “We definitely need more than one day here.” It’s an eco-adventure park that blends nature, wildlife, and culture. The kids will love swimming in underground rivers and saying hi to turtles and butterflies. There’s a dedicated area just for little ones too, with splash pads and shaded playgrounds.

Explore the Jungle with Snorkel Xtreme
For families with older kids or teens, Snorkel Xtreme is the perfect adrenaline fix. You get to zipline through the trees, rappel into a cenote, and snorkel in both fresh- and saltwater areas. It’s definitely more on the adventurous side, but totally worth it if you’re looking to do something a bit more active and off the beaten path.

Get Wild at Croco Cun Zoo
This is such a hidden gem! Croco Cun Zoo is small and hands-on—you actually walk through the zoo with a guide, and the kids get to feed deer, hold snakes (if they’re brave enough), and even get up close to crocodiles (safely, of course). It’s fun and surprisingly educational, especially for little animal lovers.

Swim in Cenote Azul
For a low-key, budget-friendly activity, head to Cenote Azul. The water is insanely clear, with shallow areas perfect for young kids and deeper spots for swimming or cliff jumping if you’re feeling brave. Bring snacks and water shoes if you go.

Monkey Spotting at Sandos Caracol Eco Resort
Even if you’re not staying there, you can get a day pass to Sandos Caracol Eco Resort and explore their nature trails, cenotes, and jungle areas. You can see spider monkeys swinging through the trees right above you!

Beachside Bike Rides
One of our favorite ways to explore a city is on two wheels. You can rent bikes near 5th Avenue or borrow them from your hotel if they offer them. Riding along the beach paths with the ocean breeze in your face is just such a peaceful, fun way to spend the morning.
Private Boat Rentals & Sailing Tours
Want to feel like VIPs for a day? Book a luxury catamaran with companies such as Sailo, Playa Yachting, Playa del Carmen Yacht Rentals or Be Fun Sailing. You can snorkel off the back of the boat, sip on your cold drinks, and enjoy a super laid-back and beautiful day.
If you're looking for a more affordable option, GetMyBoat is like the Airbnb of boat rentals—you can find everything from fishing boats to sleek yachts to fit your budget.

Horseback Riding on the Beach
This was one of those bucket list moments: riding horses along the beach with the turquoise Caribbean right next to us. Several local tour companies offer family-friendly horseback rides, and it was surprisingly easy for beginners. It’s such a peaceful, memorable way to see a different side of Playa.

ATV & Horseback Riding Combo Tour
For a full day of adventure, book a combo tour through Playa del Carmen Tours that includes everything: an ATV jungle ride, a scenic horseback ride, a cenote swim, and access to a gorgeous beach club to unwind at the end. It’s about five hours long—perfect for wearing everyone out just enough before dinner.
