The Poconos are just a short drive away from New York City—about 1.5 to 2 hours—making it an ideal destination for a quick family getaway. Since we've visited many times, we've compiled a list of activities that are perfect for kids. Both summer and winter in the Poconos offer a variety of outdoor fun, from water activities and wildlife exploration in the warmer months to thrilling winter sports and cozy indoor options when the weather turns cold. Whether your family is seeking adventure, relaxation, or a chance to learn about nature, the Poconos has something for everyone!


Summer Activities:

·         Camelback offers a wide variety of summer activities for families, including mountain coaster rides, an indoor and outdoor waterpark, zip lining, and an aerial ropes course. It’s a one-stop location for thrilling and outdoor adventures for kids of all ages.

 

·         Bushkill Falls, known as the Niagara of Pennsylvania, is a beautiful network of waterfalls nestled in the Pocono Mountains. There are easy hiking trails that lead to scenic views of the falls, perfect for exploration and hiking.


·         The Kalahari Resort is home to one of the largest indoor waterparks in the U.S. During the summer, families can also enjoy the outdoor waterpark with thrilling slides, a lazy river, and splash zones for younger kids.

 

·         A visit to the small, family-friendly Pocono Indian Museum offers kids an opportunity to learn about Native American history and culture. It’s an interactive experience with artifacts and exhibits showcasing local history.


·         Lake Wallenpaupack offers plenty of water-based activities such as boating, kayaking, and swimming. You can also enjoy a picnic by the shore or rent a pontoon boat for a relaxing day on the water.


·         Tobyhanna State Park offers a beautiful setting for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, swimming, and picnicking. It also features a large lake for boating and canoeing.

 

·         The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area offers various family-friendly hiking trails, including easy paths along the river, as well as opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. You can also enjoy scenic views of the river and mountains.

·         The Great Wolf Lodge features an outdoor waterpark and kid-friendly attractions like a ropes course, mini-golf, and an arcade. It's a great place to let the kids burn off energy with fun activities.

 

·         The Bushkill Riding Stables offers beginner horseback riding, where families can enjoy scenic trails through the lush, green landscapes of the region. Another great spot for horseback riding is Mountain Creek Riding Stables, where you can enjoy a guided trail ride through the beautiful mountains and valleys of the Poconos. Additional options include Daisy Field Farms and Happy Trails Stables.

 

 

Winter Activities:

·         Camelback turns into a winter wonderland with skiing and snowboarding for all skill levels. Kids and adults can take ski lessons on the small bunny hill, or enjoy snow tubing, making it a perfect destination for winter sports enthusiasts. Additionally, the indoor waterpark is open year round, offering the opportunity for a day at the pool in frigid temperatures.

·         Pocono TreeVentures offers an aerial adventure course with zip lining and obstacles, even in the winter months. The outdoor winter setting provides an exciting challenge for older kids and adults alike.


·         Blue Mountain is known for having the highest vertical drop in Pennsylvania, making it a fantastic place for skiing and snowboarding. The resort also has a large snow tubing park that kids love.

·         There are several ice rinks in the Poconos, such as the Shawnee Mountain Ice Skating Rink and the Skytop Lodge. These venues offer family-friendly skating sessions, perfect for kids to enjoy a fun winter activity.

 

·         Shawnee Mountain offers a wide range of winter activities, including skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing. They also have a children’s learning center, making it a great option for beginners or families with younger kids.

 

·         You can experience exciting snowmobiling/ snow ATV adventures at Pocono Outdoor Adventures in the Poconos, where you can ride through scenic trails in the heart of the mountains. Another great spot for snowmobiling/ snow ATV is Alvin's Off-road Playground, which offers rentals and guided tours across miles of pristine snow-covered trails.


·         Big Boulder is one of the best places for snow tubing in the Poconos. Kids and adults alike can slide down the mountain in inflatable tubes. There are various tubing lanes, offering fun for the whole family.

 

·         For families looking to enjoy a more serene winter activity, Mountain Creek Riding Stables or Bushkill Riding Stables offers guided horseback riding through the snow, giving you a chance to experience the beauty of the Poconos in a calm, wintery setting.


·         For a truly unique adventure, Arctic Paws Dog Sled Tours offers unforgettable dog sledding experiences, allowing you to get up close with huskies while you glide across snowy terrain. Note- they are often only open on Saturday and Sunday. Plan accordingly.

 

·         For a unique winter experience, try ice fishing on Lake Wallenpaupack. Equipment rentals are available before heading out on the ice for a chance to catch fish in the cold winter months.

 

·         Naturfi offers snowshoeing in the winter, with easy trails and beautiful wintry landscapes.


·         Take a ride through a winter wonderland with Happy Trails Stables in the Poconos. Wrap up in a warm blanket next to your loved ones and enjoy the pine-scented air as you glide through the snow on a horse-drawn sleigh
