Rhode Island

Basics: Newport is a very walkable city. During the high season, it can be difficult to find parking near the popular tourist areas. We recommend parking in a central location and walking around, as most of the major attractions are only a few blocks apart.

Minyan: Newport has a minyan during the high season, as well as on Shabbos throughout the winter.

Kosher Food: Newport does not have any kosher supermarkets or dining options. However, there are some kosher options in nearby Providence, with the possibility of delivery for larger orders. We opted to bring along most of our supplies and picked up the basics at local stores.

Weather: The weather in Newport is similar to New York City (our hometown)—cold in the winter and hot in the summer. However, since Newport is located on the Atlantic Ocean, the ocean breeze can help temper the heat a bit in the summer.

Hotels and Attractions: We stayed at a beautiful hotel located on a small island just off Newport. The property, once owned by Hyatt, has since been renovated and reopened as the Newport Harbor Island Resort. The hotel was gorgeous, and we enjoyed the more laid-back vibe compared to the city hotels. The island also has a small lighthouse that we explored, along with fields and walking paths to enjoy.

Since we visited in winter, we didn’t need to book anything in advance and were able to plan our trip as we went along. However, during the summer, Newport can get quite crowded, so we recommend making advance reservations for mansion tours, boat rentals, and helicopter tours.
